Petra Kvitova rallies from one set down to beat Louisa Chirico in New Haven

Petra Kvitova, olympic singles bronze medallist in Rio de Janeiro, came back from one set down to beat world number 79 Louisa Chirico 1-6 6-1 6-3. Both players traded breaks in the first two games of the opening set but Chirico got two breaks in the fourth and sixth games and held her service games en route to cruising to a 6-1 win in the first set. Kvitova won just two points in three Chirico’s service games.

Chirico went up 30-40 earning a break point in the first game of the second set but Kvitova saved it. The Czech player got two consecutive breaks in the fourth and sixth games to wrap up the second set 6-1.

Kvitova played aggressively in the decisive set and got a double break in the third and fifth games. She had a lapse in concentration and dropped her serve in the sixth game but closed out the third set 6-3. Kvitova set up a match against Eugenie Bouchard in a re-make of the 2014 Wimbledon final.

Jelena Ostapenko beat Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 6-2. Both players held their service games only twice in the first set which featured seven breaks. Wozniaki went up 30-40 on Ostapenko’s serve earning a break point but the Latvian player saved it. Ostapenko broke serve in the next game and served out for the set to clinch the first set 7-5. Both players traded breaks twice in the third and fourth games. Wozniacki won just two points on her next two service games to drop her serve twice in the fifth and seventh games. Ostapenko did not look back and served out for the match to 15 to clinch the win.

Croatian Ana Konjiuh beat Kayla Day 6-0 6-3 setting up a match against 2015 US Open finalist Roberta Vinci.
