Petra Kvitova has eased past Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-0 to reach the semifinals at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero.
The two-time Wimbledon champion did not face a single break point against the Ukrainian player, who stunned Serena Wlliams earlier in the tournament. Kvitova earned three consecutive break points in the third game and got her first chance to take a 2-1 lead. She grabbed the double break in the seventh game and served out for the first set to 15.
Kvitova continued her dominance with a whitewash in the second set. Breaking Svitolina to 15, she extended her lead in the match to a set and a break. There was no way back for her oponent as she broke once again in the third and fifth game. Serving for the match, the Czech sealed the win with a forehand winner.
The reward for the Czech will be a semifinal match against Monica Puig, who cruised past Laura Siegemund 6-1 6-1. Both players traded breaks in the second and the third games. Puig broke in the second game to 30 but Siegemund broke back at deuce on her third break point chance. Those were the only opportunities created by the German player in the whole match as Puig got two breaks for 3-1 and 5-1 and closed out on her first match point.
Madison Keys broke five times to beat Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-1 after 54 minutes in a match between two of the most promising young stars of the circuit. Keys has set up a semifinal match against either Joanna Konta or Angelique Kerber. The encounter was the first ever meeting between the two youngsters.
Keys, who reached the final in Montreal, got a double break in the second and fourth games to race out to a 5-0 lead. Kasatkina bounced back by getting one of the two breaks back in the seventh game for 2-5 after Keys made four consecutive unforced errors. Kasatkina consolidated her break at deuce in the eighth game but Keys served out for the first set on her second chance.
Keys cruised through to a 6-1 win in the second set thanks to three breaks of serve in the first, fifth and seventh games.
In the doubles tournament Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky cruised past Chang Yun Jan and Chan Hao-Ching 6-3 6-0. The Swiss doubles team went down an early break in the second game of the opening set to trail 0-2 but bounced back by getting six consecutive breaks of serve to set up a semifinal match against London Olympic silver medallists Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, who fended off three match points to beat Daria Kasatkina and Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1 4-6 7-5.
Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strykova, who upset Serena and Venus Williams, fought back from one set down to beat former world number 1 players Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci 4-6 6-4 6-4. The Czech team set up a semifinal match against Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, who beat Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-4.
