Petra Kvitova faced a tough first round against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who won their only two previous two head-to-head matches in three sets in Doha and Birmingham this year.
Kvitova, an Olympic bronze medallist in the singles tournament in Rio de Janeiro, dropped her first two service games. The Czech got one of the two breaks back. From 3-1 Ostapenko saved a break point and served for the match at 5-4 but Kvitova converted her second break point to draw level to 5-5. The two-time Wimbledon champion won four consecutive points to serve out the first set 7-5.
Kvitova faced three break points in the third game of the second set to hold her service game before breaking in the fourth game for 3-1. Ostapenko broke back to 30 in the seventh game for 3-4 as Kvitova made two double faults. Ostapenko dropped her serve in the 8th game to 15. At 5-3 30-0 Kvitova close out the match with two forehands down the line to win 7-5, 6-3.
Caroline Wozniacki fought back from one set down to beat world number 146 Taylor Townsend 4-6 6-3 6-4. Townsend got through three qualifying rounds without dropping a set. Wozniacki won both their previous head-to-head matches. Wozniacki went up a break in the fourth game but the 20-year US player fought back by winning four consecutive games with two consecutive breaks to take a 5-3 lead. She earned the chance to serve for the first set. Townsend made a smash error but closed out the set on her third chance.
Wozniacki fought back by getting the only break of the second set to love in the second game. She held her next service games to win the second set 6-3.
Townsend faced the first break point of the decisive set at 3-3 but saved it with her service winner. Wozniacki broke serve in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead as Townsend made three unforced errors. Wozniacki saved a break point before closing out the match at deuce as Townsend sent her forhand long.
