
Petra Kvitova has become the won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympic Games after defeating Madison Keys 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
The two-time Wimbledon champion displayed her best and worst tennis as she produced an uncomfortable 38 unforced errors compared to just 12 winners. Nevertheless, Kvitova was the one with the greater experience and she was able to capitalize against an even more erratic keys, whose error-winner ratio was a dismal 24-49.
Statistics doesn’t always tell the story and this is the case for Kvitova, who has endured a troublesome season on her way to her maiden Olympic medal. The achievement in Rio comes after a series of disappointment results on the tour earlier this season. The Czech dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since 2013 in May and she is also yet to win a title this season.
“I’m still a bit emotional, so if I cry, sorry… It means almost everything, definitely. Having a medal from the Olympics is one of the best things that’s happened in my career definitely, along with the two Wimbledon titles, winning Fed Cups and WTA (titles).” Kvitova said in her press conference.
“It’s definitely one of the best days today. I hope I’m going to celebrate it. I’m very proud that I could bring it to the Czech Republic.”
Kvitova has become the first player from her country to win a medal in the singles event since 1996.
