Novak Djokovic Set To Skip The Cincinnati Masters

Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will not play another tournament until the US Open according to Serbian media reports.

The confirmation from the world No.1 came shortly after his loss in the doubles tournament at the Olympic Games. Partnered with Nenad Zimonjic, the pairing lost6-4, 6-4, in the second round to Brazilian third seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno. Djokovic’s loss comes a day after crashing out in the singles draw to Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro.

Following his loss on Monday, Djokovic confirmed to a Serbian journalist that he will not be playing in the Cincinnati Masters. Alex Krstanovic, a reporter for Sportska Centrala, also revealed that the world No.1 didn’t say anything about a potential injury concern when asked.

Speculation surfaced that Djokovic would participate in the Cincinnati tournament following Roger Federer’s withdrawal. The Swiss 35-year-old has dominated the tournament in recent time, winning the trophy in seven out of the last 11 years. Djokovic has never won the title, but has been a runner-up on five occasions.

Suffering a due to early losses in Rio de Janiero, this year’s Olympic Games is one that Djokovic would want to forget. Confirming that he will not play in the mixed doubles competition, the 29-year-old is hopeful that he can redeem himself in four years time at the Tokyo Games.

Djokovic will not return to the tour until the end of August at the US Open in New York. The Serbian will be bidding to successfully defend his title at Flushing Meadows and win his 13th grand slam title.
