Formidable sisters Serena and Venus Williams have won their 14th grand slam doubles title after defeating fifth seeds Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-4.
This year’s Wimbledon Championships was only their third event together this year after the Rome and French Open. Nevertheless, they strolled to the title by dropping only one set in the entire tournament.
Proceedings wasn’t straightforward in the final for the pair due to some impressive resistance displayed by Babos and Shvedova, a pairing who has only won one title together back in 2013. Recovering from a break down midway through the opening set, newly crowned singles champion Serena and her sister Venus overpowered their rivals to close the 90-minute final out on their second match point.
“That was really special, awesome to be winning with Venus, who is the boss,” Serena said after the win.
“We love playing together. I had time just to change and tape my ankles again, but I so much adrenaline in me I didn’t want to cool down (from the singles).”
They duo has now won all 14 of their doubles finals in major tournaments and is now joint-second in the all-time list for the most doubles titles won by a team. The current all-time record is held by Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver, who won 20 titles between 1982-1989.
Earlier in the day Serena also triumph in the singles competition with a straight-sets win over Angelique Kerber. She has now equalled Steffi Graf’s record of 22 singles grand slam titles.
