Misbehaving at Wimbledon is a costly business and Great Britain’s Heather Watson knows this better than anybody else.
The world No.55 suffered heartbreak at this year’s Wimbledon Championships after being edged out by Germany’s Annika Beck in the first round, losing 8-10 in the decider. During the marathon encounter, the Brit received a warning after digging her racket into the turf at the tournament. As a result of her actions, Watson has been fined $12,000, almost half the total prize money she earned at the tournament.
Watson’s fine surpasses Victor Troicki, who received a $10,000 penalty following his infamous outburst with the umpire during his match against Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The Serbian was outraged when an ace from Ramos-Vinolas was called out before it was overruled by the umpire. During the heated confrontation, he called the official ‘the worst umpire in the world.’

World No.1 Serena Williams has been fined $10,000 for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ during her second round match against Christina McHale. During one of her changeovers, she repeatedly smashed her racket on the ground before throwing it behind her towards a cameraman. Williams is no stranger to fines. At the 2009 US Open she received a record $82,500 penalty for poor conduct during her semifinal match against Kim Clijsters.
Finally, Australian wild child Nick Kyrgios received two fines totaling $6,500 ($4000 and $2500). He received the penalties for verbal obscenities and poor behaviour on the court. It is the third consecutive grand slam that he has been fined.
Wimbledon prize money is given to the players in pounds, however, they have to pay their fines in dollars. A further blow to the grass-court offenders considering the current state of the British economy.
@stu_fraser Wait. Do they get paid in pounds but fined in dollars? Cuz give the current economic climate, that’s a triple hosing.
