Pablo Cuevas shrugged off a recent Wimbledon controversy as he kicked-off his campaign with a routine win over Germany’s Florian Mayer at the German Open in Hamburg. The third-seeded Uruguayan won 6-4 6-3 in the 75-minute opener.
Cuevas, who made the headlines last week for allegedly threatening to urinate courtside, didn’t let the hullabaloo get the better of him as the third-seeded Uruguayan lost just three points on first serve and didn’t offer any break point opportunity throughout.
Interestingly, Cuevas had suffered a straight-set defeat to Mayer at the same event six years ago.
Elsewhere, sixth seed Nicolas Almagro survived a fightback from Czech qualifier Jan Satral, winning 6-3 3-6 6-2 in an hour and 43 minutes. The Spaniard next takes on Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, who beat Austria’s Gerald Melzer 6-4 7-6.
It was however an early exit for fifth-seeded Jeremy Chardy as the Frenchman stumbled to a 6-2 2-6 7-6 loss to 142nd-ranked Maximo Gonzalez.
