27th seed Coco Vandeweghe required only 69 minutes to knock out the sixth seed, Roberta Vinci, in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships.
Coming into the match, Vandeweghe was in impressive form. During her first two matches at SW19, the American has only faced one break point and has won 83% of her first service points. The impressive performance continued against Vinci with the world No.30 dominating the rallies and moving the Italian around the court.
Remaining consistent in her service games throughout the first set, the pressure was on sixth seed Vinci. A costly double fault from the US Open runner-up handed the American her first break of the match as she raced to a one set lead after just 32 minutes of play. Throughout the opening set Vandeweghe produced 12 winners compared to Vinci’s three and dropped only five points on her serve.
Starting the match so impressively, it was inevitable that there would be a blip at some point for the 2015 Wimbledon quarter-finalist. This occurred at the start of the second set when a Vandeweghe error allowed Vinci to retrieve a break. The match was finally becoming more equal between both players, but the 27th seed was still the dominant force. Breaking once again for 2-1, she carefully manoeuvred herself to her first chance to serve for the match. The task was easy for the 24-year-old, who triumphed on her first match point following a forehand shank from her opponent.
During her impressive third round performance. The world No. 30 produced three aces, 21 winners and 17 unforced errors.
“Roberta is a very tough opponent, she has a lot of craftiness to her game that you don’t see too much.” She said shortly after her win.
“She makes you beat her. That’s what I tried to do, I stayed focused and keep pressing.”
“Overall, I’m happy with my match.”
Vandeweghe now faces a last-16 meeting with Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who knocked out 11th seed Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-2. The 21st seed fired 24 winners and won 82% of her first service points to reach the fourth round at the tournament for the first time in her career. Prior to this year’s Wimbledon championships, Pavlyuchenkova hasn’t reached the fourth round at a major tournament since the 2011 French Open.
The upcoming clash will be the first meeting between Vandeweghe and Pavlyuchenkova since the 2014 Miami Open. On that occasion the American took the win in two close sets.
