The Argentinian team advances into the Davis Cup’s semifinals after prevailing 3-1 on Italy in Pesaro.
The quarterfinal was played in Pesaro, in Italy, on red clay outdoor. On Friday only one match was played because of rain, so Italian Fabio Fognini had to play singles and doubles on Saturday, before entering the court again on Sunday for the third singles match.
Argentine won the first tie as Federico Delbonis defeated Andreas Seppi in four sets, but in the next day Italy won the second as an inspired Fabio Fognini needed only three sets to beat Juan Monaco.
With Andreas Seppi suffering a back injury and Simone Bolelli not available, Corrado Barazzutti chose Paolo Lorenzi to team up with Fabio Fognini in doubles, while Juan Martin Del Potro and Guido Pella were chosen by Argentine’s captain Daniel Orsanic. In a five set battle, Lorenzi and Fognini could not come back from two sets to love down, as Del Potro and Pella made the decisive break in the fifth to take it 6-4.
With Argentine up 2-1, Fabio Fognini was called to play another match, this time against Federico Delbonis. The Argentinian was very solid: served well, expecially from the left, played powerful and deep shots during the rally, missing very few shots. With Delbonis up two sets to one, Fognini kept fighting but he could not convert four set points on 5-4, before losing the next two games and the match.
In the semifinals, Argentine will face Great Britain.
