Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is set to miss the Toronto Masters in order to focus on the upcoming Olympic Games according to a British media source.

The world No.2 will instead travel to Mallorca on Wednesday with his coach Jamie Delgado for a two-week training block to prepare for the Rio Olympics. Murray’s plan was confirmed by Delgardo according to sports journalist Stuart Fraser.

Murray’s rumoured withdrawal comes shortly after his Davis Cup absence. The world No.2 travelled with his team to Serbia, but decided to rest and not to play in the tie. Nevertheless, Great Britain won their clash with a  3-1 triumph over Serbia.

It is unclear if Murray has formally withdrawn from the Rogers Cup. According to the tournament website, he is still listed as playing at the event. The Brit hasn’t missed the Canadian tournament since 2005 and is the defending champion after defeating Novak Djokovic in last year’s final. It was the first time that Murray had beaten for the Serbian for two years.

Unlike last year, Murray has to factor in the Olympic Games, which starts on August 5th. He is the defending champion and will be bidding to become the first male tennis player in history to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the singles competition.

“I’ve loved being in the two Olympics that I’ve been at,” Murray said.
“Rio is obviously a big, big goal of mine, and hopefully I can perform well there.”

Regardless of Murray’s likely absence from Toronto, the tournament will still feature a world-class field. He will be the only top-10 player to miss the tournament. Rafael Nadal will make his comeback at the tournament after being sidelined from action due to a wrist injury.
