The entry list for the Winston Salem Open has been announced.
The tournament, an ATP 250, is the last event of the Emirates Airline Us Open Series before the final grand slam of the year, the US Open. It takes place at the Wake Forest University in Winston Salem (North Carolina), in the United States. The tournament has been played since 2011, when it took the place of New Haven. Last year’s champion Kevin Anderson will need a perfect week to defend his title.
In the 2016 edition’s acceptance list, the highest ranked player is world No.14 Richard Gasquet from France, while two time-champion John Isner has not entered it. Five Americans are in the main draw: Steve Johnson, Sam Querrey, Taylor Fritz and Donald Young will be tough opponents for every player.
Other notable entrants include former top-ten player Marcos Baghdatis and a trio of French players (Benoit Paire, Gilles Simon and Nicolas Mahut). Argentina’s Juan Monaco has taken advantage of his protected ranking to get in the main draw. Finally, former finalist Pierre-Hugues Herbert is the fourth alternate and may need to play the qualifying competition.
