Tuesday will see the start of Serena Williams’ campaign to equal Steffi Garf’s record of 22 grand slam titles.
The world No.1 will take to Centre Court at 13:00 to start her third round match against Swiss qualifier Amra Sadikovic, a player who will be making her grand slam debut at the age of 27. Williams has an outstanding record against qualifiers and Lucky losers, winning 51 out of 54 matches against them in her career (two of her three losses were due to retirements).
Following Williams on the court will be home favourite Andy Murray, who faces compatriot Liam Broady. This year marks Murray’s 11th appearance at Wimbledon and he has never lost in the first round. On the other hand, world No.235 Broady is making his second appearance.
Completing the headliners on the premier court will be a battle between former grand slam champions Caroline Wozniacki and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Wozniacki missed the clay court season due to injury, resulting in her falling down the rankings and missing out on a seeding. It is the first time that she has been unseeded at Wimbledon since 2007. Kuznetsova on the other hand is seeded 13th and has one WTA title to her name this season from Sydney. Wozniacki narrowly leads the head-to-head 6-5.
Court one will start with one of the best players in the world against one of the most promising. Fourth seed Stan Wawrinka will start against Taylor Fritz. Guided by mentor and 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, the Swiss player will be hoping to win his first match on the grass this year after suffering a first round loss at the Aegon Championships. Second on court will be the first British female to be seeded in the tournament since 1984, Johanna Konta. Konta faces a tough match against Monica Puig, who recently reached the semifinals in Eastbourne as a qualifier. Finally, two-time champion Petra Kvitova will start against Sorana Cirstea in what will be a rematch of their first round clash at the 2010 Wimbledon tournament. On that occasion Kvitova took the win in straight sets.
Outside of the two main courts, one of the most anticipated matches of the day will take place on court 12. Juan Martin del Potro will end his three-year hiatus from the tournament when he plays Frenchman Stephane Robert. It will be the Argentine’s first match of the tournament since his memorable five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2013 semifinals. Other notable matches to watch out for include Richard Gasquet against British hopeful Aljaz Bedene, Nick Kyrgios against Czech veteran Radek Stepanek and Dominic Thiem against Florian Mayer.
