The top-ranked women’s doubles duo of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have become the first pair to qualify for the year-ending WTA Finals, scheduled to be held from October 23-30 in Singapore.
The tournament comprises of eight best combinations of the season, with the winner walking away with prize money up to $500,000, besides getting hold of over 1000 potential ranking points.
While Mirza and Hingis won the title here last year, the former will look to complete a hat-trick of titles this time around, having also won alongside Zimbabwean Cara Black in the 2014 edition.
“Being able to achieve such great success together has been a dream come true,” Mirza was quoted as saying by WTA Tennis. “I’m very much looking forward to competing in Singapore once again to try to make it three titles in a row.”
Hingis also expressed contentment with her partner, saying: “Qualifying for the WTA Finals for the second year in a row with Sania is very exciting. (We) hope to defend our title amongst the best doubles teams in the world.”
The Indian-Swiss combination kicked-off their partnership in March last year, and went on sign off the season with an incredible 55-7 record that encompassed of nine titles including the Wimbledon and US Open triumphs.
Their razor-sharp dominance has continued this year as well, with the duo adding five more titles to their kitty already, including the Australian Open title.
Meanwhile, Mirza and Hingis are currently warming up for Wimbledon at the Aegon International in Eastbourne. Seeded No. 1, they are scheduled to square-off against the Czech-Australian twosome of Lucie Safarova and Samantha Stosur in the first round.
