Roger Federer’s love affair with Wimbledon is as much known as his significance among the tennis fans. Hardly has he entered the tournament without being the “favourite” to emerge victorious. However, the tradition is slated to take a beating this time around!
An injury-marred season piled on the misery for the Swiss as he was forced to withdraw from the last month’s French Open due to an upset back. Even as he claims to be injury free for the premier grass event, he wouldn’t refrain from the fact that he’s not thinking about winning the title.
“Clearly I’m not thinking of the title right away; it’s too far ahead,” the 17-time Grand Slam champion told Wimbledon upon his arrival here.
“I need to focus on myself, getting myself into those positions, meaning second week, growing momentum, you know, the whole thing starts rolling then hopefully.”
Instead, he considers World No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Andy Murray to be the frontrunners for this year’s event.
“They (Djokovic and Murray) are the big favourites in my opinion,” Federer opined. “They’ve had such a great last six months, last few years. To me they are the ones to beat.”
Federer, the No. 3 seed, is scheduled to take on Argentina’s Guido Pella in the first round on Monday.
