After an injury ended his run of 65 consecutive grand slam appearances, Roger Federer is eager to return back to winning ways at this week’s Mercedes Cup.
The former world No.1 has been blighted by a duo of injuries this season. Recovering from a knee injury in April, the Swiss player was dealt a further blow when a back injury resulted in him withdrawing from the French Open. It was the first time that Federer has missed a major tournament since the 1999 US Open. Some concluded that the cold and wet conditions contributed to Federer’s withdrawal in Paris, however, he has now dismissed this.
“I was surprised to hear that people through I pulled out because of the weather,” the 17-time grand slam champion said.
“That has nothing to do with it. Either you’re strong enough or not.”
The withdrawal reminded the world that the seemingly invincible 34-year-old can succumb to injury like everybody else. Admitting that the decision to pull out left him ‘sad for the evening’, a level-headed Federer believes that he made the right choice.
“I know it was the right decision for me not to play. After all these years, it’s ok to miss a major. It isn’t all about the majors, it’s about health, feeling good, the rest of the season and my life as well.” He said.
Spending the past three week’s with his family and training, Federer will return to action on his beloved grass. On the surface the Swiss has won 15 titles, including seven Wimbledon trophies. His comeback tournament will be at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany.
“I’m really looking forward to the grass season, it’s always a huge (part of the) season for me. It’s my first time here at the Mercedes Open and I’m really excited to be here.” Federer told the media.
Hunting for his first title of the year, a title in Stuttgart would be a ‘dream run’ according to the 34-year-old. The belief is certainly there for the tennis icon, but is his physical ability at the same level?
“A good week would be if I get on the court and play a match, a great week would be reaching the semis and a dream week would be to win the tournament.” The world No.3 said about his participation in the Mercedes Cup this week.
“Crazier things have happened, everything is possible this week. If I’m feeling somewhat fine, I will have my chances. I’m looking forward to that challenge.”
Receiving a bye in the first round, Federer will start his comeback against either American teenage talent Taylor Fritz or a yet to be confirmed qualifier.
