Just days after a wrist injury compelled Rafael Nadal to withdraw from the Roland Garros midway through the tournament, the Spaniard has also pulled out of the upcoming Wimbledon Championships.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion released a statement on his Facebook page to notify his fans about the withdrawal that was concluded upon after he failed to recover in time for the premier grass event.

“I’m sad to announce that after talking to my doctors, and receiving the results of my last medical revision, I won’t be able to play at Wimbledon this year,” the 30-year-old wrote in a lengthy note.

“As you can all imagine, it’s a very tough decision, but the injury I suffered at Roland Garros needs time to heal,” Nadal added, before confirming his absence from the pre-Wimbledon events as well.

Earlier, the Spaniard’s uncle and coach, Toni Nadal, was skeptical of his nephew’s return date as he remained coy about the Wimbledon participation, but stressed on getting fit for the Rio Olympics.

The goal is to get in the best condition for the Games in Rio. We do not want to put his participation in jeopardy. The priority now is to recover completely,” said Uncle Toni.
