There would be no ranking points on offer for the tennis players at the upcoming Rio Olympic Games, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) president David Haggerty confirmed.
This comes after the ITF received a consensus from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). The governing bodies unanimously came to a conclusion that the players play to honour their respective countries and not for the rankings.
“In the Olympics, you play for honor, for your country and that is the main reason why no points will be distributed at the (Rio) Games,” Mr. Haggerty was quoted as saying by puntodebreak.com.
The directive follows in the footsteps of the 2012 London Games, which also had no ranking points on offer for the participating players.
The event is scheduled to run from August 6-14 at the Olympic Tennis Centre.
