The Indian-Swiss combination of Leander Paes and Martina Hingis completed their career Grand Slam after they pulled off the French Open mixed doubles title on Friday.
The unseeded duo rallied from a set down to clinch a 4-6 6-4 10-8 conquest of the second-seeded pairing of India’s Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig of Croatia on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The match began with both pairs looking strong on serve. This was evident from the fact that there was no break point on offer until the 11th game, when Mirza unleashed a big forehand to convert the solitary break point opportunity at 5-4 to take the opening set, 6-4.
Paes and Hingis came back strongly in the second as they cruised for an early break to move 2-1 up. However, they were soon broken thereafter as it was all tied up at 3-3. Just when Dodig and Mirza getting going, there was a shift in momentum again as they conceded the second set, 6-4.
Subsequently, the super-tiebreaker followed in the suit of the match as it carried on the intense nature. It was, however, the duo of Paes and Hingis that maintained a slender lead throughout to register a 10-8 triumph.
This was the twosome’s fourth Grand Slam mixed doubles title together, having previously emerged victorious at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open – all in the year 2015.
