The French duo of Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia triumphed in front of the home crowd as they pulled off the women’s doubles title at the Roland Garros on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded twosome prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over the seventh-seeded Russian pairing of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The match began with the local favorites opening up a 5-0 lead. The Russians, soon, closed in on the difference by making it 3-5, before their opponents served their way to take the opener, 6-3.
The combination of Makarova and Vesnina made a stunning comeback in the second set as they toyed with their opponents’ serve, breaking them thrice en route a 6-2 fightback.
In the decisive set, both the teams broke each other once to lock the contest up at 4-4. It was, however, the home pair that ensured a vital break and a subsequent consolidation to take home their first major title together.
Interestingly, Mladenovic and Garcia winded up the clay season with a commendable win-loss record of 22-1, having won the titles in Charleston, Stuttgart, Madrid, and now Paris.
