Kei Nishirori and Misaki Doi have been confirmed to represent Japan in the men’s and women’s singles category respectively at the Rio Olympics 2016 after the latest rankings were released on Monday.
This comes after the duo met with the guidelines of making the cut to the main draw of the mega event, which requires a player to be ranked inside the Top 56 as on the scheduled cut-off date of June 6, 2016.
While Nishikori is ranked as high as No. 6 in the rankings, Doi is well inside the ring at No. 48.
According to Japan Times, this will be Nishikori’s fourth attempt at the Olympics, with his best being a quarter-final appearance at London 2012. Doi, on the other hand, will make her debut this time around.
However, there’s likely to be no Japanese pair in the doubles draw – either men’s, women’s or mixed – given that none of the players are ranked inside the Top 10 of the rankings, which is a must for one to earn a direct entry into the tournament.
The Rio Olympics is scheduled to run from August 5-21 at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Rio de Janerio.
