Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has been ruled ineligible to partake at the Rio Olympics by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) after she failed to meet the qualification guidelines.
The Dane had been out of action for a couple of months after she twisted her ankle in April this year, which compelled her to miss out on the tournaments in Madrid and Rome.
Besides, she also pulled out of Denmark’s Fed Cup ties against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which as per the rules, are a must to play if a player is to qualify for the Rio Games.
However, Wozniacki – who was named her country’s flag bearer – has appealed the ITF’s decision, the hearing of which has been scheduled to be held on June 30.
Should she be able to board her flight to Rio, it will mark her third appearance at the Olympics, having previously lost to eventual gold medalists in both Beijing and London.
