The American state of Hawaii will host a brand new WTA tennis tournament in November after confirmation from the tourism advisory board.
The Hawaii Open will be a WTA 125k event hosted on hard-courts at the Central Oahu Tennis Center. It will be the biggest tennis tournament to occur in the area since the end of the ATP Hawaii Open in 1984. The Hawaii Tourism Authority is marketing the event as ‘Hawaii’s largest professional tennis tournament in decades,’ in a press release sent to the Associated Press.
Unlike other tournaments in America, the event will take place during thanksgiving between November 21st – 27th. It will also be the first American WTA tournament to be hosted after the US Open.
Details surrounds the event are still limited, however, a press conference will be held on Thursday to provide more information about the new tournament. Attendees at the press conference will include the governor of Hawaii, David Ige.
The WTA 125K series was introduced in 2012 by the WTA. The objective of the tournament is to provide greater opportunities in terms of points and prize money to players ranked lower on the tour, a similar approach to the men’s Challenger Tour. Two tournaments have already taken place this year in San Antonio, USA and Bol, Croatia. The winners of those tournaments were Japan’s Misaki Doi and Luxemburg’s Mandy Minella. The next tournament is expected to occur in September at the Dalian Women’s Tennis Open in China.
