Will Roger Federer return to his best?
This year has been a roller coaster experience for former world No.1 Roger Federer. A knee operation, illness and a back injury has hampered his season so far. The far from perfect season has resulted in him missing the French Open, his first absence from a grand slam since the 1999 US Open.
Fortunately, things are looking up for the 34-year-old. Leading into his 18th Wimbledon tournament, Federer achieved back-to-back semifinal appearances at Stuttgart and Halle. He had also dismissed any fears about his back troubling him.
“Look, this back has won me 88 titles, so I’m okay with that back. It’s okay if it messes around with me sometimes,” he told the media on Saturday.
Since claiming his maiden title at SW19 in 2003, Federer has become one of the most beloved players at the tournament. He has played in ten Wimbledon finals and has a record seven titles (equal with Pete Sampras). This year isn’t just about another piece of silverware for the Swiss player, he is also hoping to turn his season around at a tournament where he has excelled.
“With all the success that I’ve had here, this is the motivation I need right now, to get back on the big courts, play good matches and enjoy Wimbledon.” He said.
“I love this tournament more than anything, so it’s a huge opportunity for me to maybe turn around the season, who knows, and just play some nice tennis and enjoy myself here.”
