There can’t be any family prouder than Novak Djokovic’s at this moment in time. The world No.1 has finally ended his French Open title drought after defeating Andy Murray in four sets.
Novak’s mother, Dijana, and uncle Goran spoke to ubitennis shortly after his win at Roland Garros. Dijana declared herself ‘the happiest mother in the world’ following the triumph.
“I am the happiest mother in the world right now,” she told ubitennis.
“ I’m very proud of my son because he achieved things that we can’t imagine.”
Uncle Goran was just as proud. Speaking of his delight, he has tipped Djokovic to one day overtake Roger Federer’s record of 17 grand slam titles. Goran, who helps manage Djokovic’s investments, said that the next goal for his nephew is to achieve the calendar slam and win the Olympic Games this year.
“It’s unbelievable, we are still shocked,” Goran said about his nephews French Open win.
“This is Novak’s 12th Roland Garros, 11 has been lost and now he finally wins. We are so happy.”
Goran attributed Djokovic’s French Open win to his ‘stable mentality’ and the fact he hasn’t made similar errors to the ones of the past.
Another person to speak of his delight was three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten. Kuerten has also tipped Djokovic to one day beat Federer’s grand slam record.
“He’s able to break all the numbers, he’s getting closer to Roger now,” Kuerten said.
“Perhaps in a year or two he has a real chance of getting the numbers on the slams.”
The thing about Djokovic that has taken Kuerten by surprise is the continuous improvement in Djokovic’s game.
“He is getting better every year, which to me is scary.” He said.
