It was a moment of joy for Belinda Bencic after the tournament organizers shifted her first round match against Tsvetana Pironkova from Court 3 to the roof-protected Centre Court at Wimbledon following heavy downpour that compelled a change in the schedule on Wednesday.
The seventh-seeded Swiss didn’t disappoint the move as she went on to register a clinical 6-2 6-3 conquest of her Bulgarian adversary in a 76-minute battle on her Centre Court debut.
“When I was told I had goose bumps all over my body,” the 19-year-old was quoted as saying by Wimbledon.com. “The supervisor came to me and told me I was going to play Centre Court.
“I just felt so comfortable; I feel this is going to be my court hopefully soon,” she added.
Bencic will look to carry on the momentum in the second round when she returns back to Court 3 against American journeywoman Julia Boserup on Thursday.
