Tennis stars from both the men’s and women’s tour have featured in a special video to wish Flavia Pennetta a happy retirement.
The 34-year-old announced her retirement from tennis shortly after winning the US Open last year, her first grand slam title. During her career, Pennetta has won 28 titles on the WTA Tour (11 singles and 17 doubles). In celebration of her career, a special ceremony was held at the Internazionali BNP d’Italia in Rome. Speaking about her special night, Pennetta thanked the tour for their support.
“It was so nice to have the people here with me,” said Pennetta after the ceremony.
“The girls, Steve Simon, the WTA made an unbelievable video for me and I really appreciate everything. Like I said, this is my family. This was my family for such a long time. It’s not finished. We spend so much time together. It’s normal to feel this emotion.”
During her successful career, Pennetta became the first Italian woman to reach the top-10. There are no signs of the Italian leaving the sport completely. In the future Pennetta is hoping to work with young tennis players.
“I would like to continue working in tennis to give advice to the young people. I love my sport and want to give all that I have inside to other people.” She said.
