Victoria Azarenka and the questionable call
Victoria Azarenka’s encounter with Serena Williams is one that she won’t forget for a long time. The Belorussian was on the verge of defeating the top seed in straight sets before Williams battled back to clinch the match. As Azarenka faced a set point in the second set, she hit a forehand to the baseline, which was incorrectly called out. Due to the depth of the ball, Williams has no chance of returning the ball over the net. Despite this, the umpire decided not to award the point and instead called for a replay, which Williams won to seal the set. The verdict enraged Azarenka, who was given a warning for a verbal obscenity.
“I think that … sometimes we need to have a review. You know, to have a damn review, because it was so clear.” Azarenka said after the match.
“You know, I give a benefit of a doubt always, that is in a 50/50 situation, there is a close call and whatever, but that was so damn clear that you cannot make these mistakes at this level.
“She had already hit the ball. The ball was touching the net and he says it’s not a late call. So for me, there definitely has to be a review on that.
Following the controversial decision, both Azarenka and Williams has insisted that the incident hasn’t caused a rift between the two players.
