The 115th French Open will shortly get underway with the best players in the world battling against each other to win the ultimate clay court title. The grand slam is certainly rich is history and has been praised by many throughout the years. Despite this, the tournament has also had their fair share of controversies in recent time.
The Stan Wawrinka article
As Stan Wawrinka prepared for his first round match against Turkish player Marsel İlhan, his personal life was brought into limelight by a controversial article that was uploaded on the official tournament website.
A preview of Wawrinka’s upcoming match turned into a detailed account of Wawrinka’s personal life and his relationship with his ex-wife. The feature also detailed the emergence of his relationship with Donna Vekic and suggested that he should turn to Roger Federer for help about ‘how to juggle personal and private lives’. The article was swiftly removed, but it didn’t stop Wawrinka from hitting out.
“It’s a completely stupid article,” the Swiss said during the 2015 tournament.
“It’s the official website of a Grand Slam, so I hope the guy who did that article is not a journalist.
“I also hope the guy who is supposed to check all the article on the website is not working anymore for the tournament.”
The article did nothing to disrupt Wawrinka’s momentum as he went on to clinch his second grand slam title. As for the writer of the story, don’t expect to see him working for the site this year.
