Stan Wawrinka overcomes Taro Daniel to advance to the third round at Roland Garros

Roland Garros defending champion Stan Wawrinka edged past Japan’s Taro Daniel 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 6-4 to get through to the third round.

Wawrinka earned three early break points but failed to convert them. The first set went on serve until the tie-break. Wawrinka saved a set point at 4-6 and fought back by winning five of the next six points to win the first set. The Lausanne player broke serve twice in the first and nine games to close out a 6-3 lead.

Daniel got an early break in the first game of the third set. Wawrinka broke back at deuce for 4-4 in a very long eighth game before breaking again to close out the third set 6-4 with a backhand winner after 2 hours and 7 minutes. Wawrinka will take on Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the third round.

Wawrinka converted four of his 17 break point chances and hit 62 winners to 40 unforced errors.

Alexander Zverev fought back from one set down to battle past Pierre-Hugues Herbert 5-7 6-2 7-6 (8-6) 7-5. The match was interrupted due to bad light after Zverev fended off three set points at 3-6 down to clinch the tie-break of the third set. After the match resumed on Wednesday, Zverev broke serve in the 12th game to clinch the fourth set 7-5.

Jack Sock beat German qualifier Dustin Brown 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 to reach the third round at the Roland Garros for the third consecutive year. In 2015 the US player lost to Rafa Nadal in the fourth round. Sock broke twice in the fifth and ninth games to claim the first set 6-3. In the second set both players traded breaks in the second and third games but Sock got another break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Brown broke back in the ninth game for 4-5 and held his service game to draw level to 5-5. Sock won the tie-break 7-5 to win the second set before breaking serve twice in the third and fifth games to claim the second set 6-2. Sock will take on either Albert Ramos Vinolas or Marco Trungelliti.
