Crowd favourite Stan Wawrinka swept aside Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-1 6-1 in 53 minutes to get through to the quarter finals at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, which is played just a few kilometres away from his home city Lausanne.
Ramos Vinolas forced Wawrinka to deuce on return in the first game, but the home player held his serve. The 2015 Roland Garros champion broke twice to take the first set in 32 minutes. The number 1 seed broke three more times in the third, fifth and seventh games to close out the match. On Thursday the Swiss star will play against Pablo Carreno Busta who beat Inigo Cervantes 6-2 6-4.
Wawrinka has scored just five wins in the first five Masters 1000 tournaments of the year after winning his title in Dubai but showed improving form in front of his home fans.
Defending Geneva champion Thomaz Bellucci saved all three break points he faced to cruise to a 6-2 6-1 win over Mikhail Kukushkin setting up a third round match against Federico Delbonis from Argentina. Delbonis leads 4-2 in his six previous head-to-head matches against Bellucci.
Denis Istomin beat lucky loser Florian Mayer 6-2 6-3 in 57 minutes. Istomin fended off the only break point he faced. He will take on Number 2 seed David Ferrer, who leads 2-1 in their previous three head-to-head matches.
Rajeev Ram got the decisive break in the sixth game of the third set to overcome Russian qualifier Evgeny Donskoy 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-3 in 2 hours and 7 minutes setting up a third round match against Guillermo Garcia Lopez.
