Once again Nick Kyrgios has stunned a Swiss seed in Madrid after battling past French Open champion Stan Wawrinka 7-6(7), 7-6(2).

The encounter between the two saw an army of aces fly down both ends as Wawrinka fired 11 compared to Kyrgios’ seven. The Australian nudged ahead to clinch the win after fending off four break points throughout the match and impressively winning 85% of his first service points. The match consisted of high quality from both players and even the temperamental 21-year-old was enjoying proceedings at the Caja Magica.

“I felt we both served really well and we both really had early looks (on each others serves) at the start,” Kyrgios said.
“I think the level was really high today, we played some really good tennis and it was fun out there.”

It is now the second year in a row that Kyrgios has disappointed Swiss fans in Madrid. Last year he stunned top seed Roger Federer in the second round. The fast conditions along with the altitude benefits the big servers in the game, Kyrgios being one of them.

“I think my serve is my main strength,” the world No.21 said.
“ I think no matter where I play, my serve is my main strength. Especially today I served great and I competed well.”

The increase in Kyrgios’ recent form isn’t due to an increase of match play. In fact, it is the opposite which is benefiting the Australian. Candidly admitted that he ‘is not ready’ to play one the tour every week, Kyrgios has opted for a light schedule.

“I think the schedule is playing a big part in my form,” he said.
“I think when you play every week your body can get tired and you can get mentally weak.”
“I don’t think my body or mentality is ready to play week in week out.”

The win could set Kyrgios up with a meeting against one of his idols, Gael Monfils. Speaking about the Frenchman, the 21-year-old labelled his was ‘one of the best’ athletes in the world.

I think he’s one of the best athletes in the world. Playing him tomorrow I will obviously be nervous because he’s my favorite player,” Kyrgios said.

In order for Kyrgios to play against his idol, Monfils must get past his third round encounter against Pablo Cuevas.
