Kei Nishikori, winner in Memphis and runner-up in Miami and Barcelona, came back from a set down to overcome Viktor Troicki 5-7 6-2 6-3 to highlight the second day of the Internazionali d’Italia in Rome. The first set went on serve until the 12th game when Troicki got the only break on his third opportunity to take the first set 7-5. Nishikori got a double break in the third and seventh games to pull away to 5-2 and served out for the second set at deuce forcing the match to the third set. Nishikori got two more breaks in the fifth and ninth games to close out the third set 6-3.
Tomas Berdych fended off all break points he faced in his 6-3 6-4 win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas to reach the third round at the Internazionali d’Italia at the Foro Italico in Rome.
Berdych had to face five break points in his first two service games. Ramos Vinolas won his first service game to 15 and his next two to love. Berdych broke serve to 30 to take a 5-3 lead and served out for the set on his first opportunity. Berdych got his only break of the second set before saving two break points in the fourth game. The Czech player closed out on his first match point setting up a third round match against either David Goffin or Jack Sock.
This year’s Munich champion Phillip Kohlschreiber beat Inigo Cervantes 6-4 6-2. Cervantes failed to convert three break points in the fourth game of the first set before dropping his serve in the next game. Kohlschreiber dropped his serve in the seventh game but broke again in the 10th game to win the first set 6-4. Cervantes failed to convert four break points at the start of the second set. Kohlschreiber got a double break in the fourth and eighth games to convert his second match point. Kohlschreiber set up a second round against Rafa Nadal.
Jeremy Chardy fought back from a set down to beat Damir Dzumhur 2-6 6-4 6-2. Stephane Robert beat Aljaz Bedene 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (10-8) to set up a second round against Novak Djokovic.
