The Frenchman sustained the injury while sliding for a ball, and his leg buckled mid-slide. From the expression on his face, it looked like he already knew something was wrong. Martina Navratilova, commenting for Tennis Channel, anticipated that something was wrong too, and unfortunately it resulted in the 6th seed having to withdraw. Tsonga was leading 5-2, and was truly in control of the match, and would have probably gone on to win.
With Nadal withdrawing, Tsonga was the highest seed in the second quarter of the draw. From this section of the draw, one of Marcel Granollers, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin, Nicolas Almagro or Ernests Gulbis will reach the semifinals of Roland Garros. Gulbis is the only one out of these players that has reached a semifinal of a major tournament before, at Roland Garros 2014, the best year of his career so far. However he is currently to lowest ranked out of the players. Goffin and Almagro are still battling it out for the Round of 16 spot, with Goffin leading 2 sets to 1. Thiem seems to me like the biggest favorite to reach his maiden semifinal here, as he faces Granollers in the 4th Round, and has positive head-to-head against Gulbis and Almagro.
