After reuniting with the coach who guided her to her only Grand Slam title in 2015, Sam Stosur has confirmed that she is ending her work with David Taylor on ‘mutual grounds’.
The former US Open champion returned to Taylor in April 2015. The two had previously worked together for six years between 2007-2013. During their first stint, Stosur reached 13 WTA finals, winning four titles, including the 2011 US Open when she stunned Serena Williams in the final.
There was also success during their second stint together. Under the watchful eye of Taylor, Stosur won two WTA titles last year in Strasbourg and Bad Gastein. The reason for their latest separation is due to Taylor’s family commitments. Stosur spends the majority of her time in America, whilst Taylor is based in Europe.
“It’s all very amicable and I’m even working with her on finding a suitable replacement, which she hasn’t finalized yet,” Taylor told Australian Associated Press.
“I know Sam has still got some great tennis left inside her and she continues to work harder than anyone.”
Speaking about his work with Stosur, Taylor told reporters that he is very proud of what has achieved with the Australian and what she has developed into.
“It’s been a very rewarding job to be given the opportunity to coach a player who possessed so much raw ability but, till that point, had been frustrated at not being able to put her game together,” Taylor said.
Stosur has endured a mixed start to 2016. Currently her best result of the year was a quarterfinal appearance at the Brisbane International. She also reached the fourth round in Indian Wells before losing in three sets to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka. In her most recent tournament, the Fed Cup, she suffered back-to-back losses to Christina McHale and Coco Vandeweghe.
The collaboration between the two will end after the French Open.
