The organizers of the Swiss Indoors have confirmed that at least three Grand Slam champions will take part in this year’s event in October.
Top-10 players Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka will feature in the 2016 edition of the Swiss event. Milos Raonic has also been confirmed for the tournament. Since 2006 the event has been dominated by Federer, who has won the title seven times. The other two players to triumph at the tournament in recent time are Novak Djokovic (2009) and Juan Martin Del Potro (2012 and 2013).
Concerns about the future of the event has also been addressed by tournament director, Roger Brennwald. The tournaments occurs the same week as the Vienna Open in Austria. Vienna has been upgraded to an ATP 500 event after Valencia sold their rights due to financial problems. Speaking about the financial problems that tournaments encounter, Brennwald spoke confidently about the stability of his tournament.
“We are an experienced and competent team that has been working on this piece of art for many years. We benefit from this network and tradition,” Brennwald told Swiss media.
The tournament already has an existing TV rights deal in place, which will not expire until 2018. The venue has also enjoyed strong attendance figures in recent years with there being an average of 70,000 visitors each year to the tournament.
Strong stability as well as solid attendance figures at the event is one reason as to why this year will see a record-breaking prize money fund at the event. A total of 2,151,985 euros will be up for grabs.
Keeping in line with tradition, The Swiss Indoors will be held during towards the end of the ATP calendar on October 24th. Along with Vienna, it will be the last 500 event of the 2016 season.
