Local favorite Laura Siegemund delighted her 4600 enthusiastic fans packing the Stuttgart Porsche Arena with a stunning 6-4 6-2 win over Agnieszka Radwanska. The player from Filderstadt scored her third win over a top-10 player in her breakthrough week.
Agnieszka Radwanska got her first break of serve in the fourth game to 15 with a crosscourt forehand winner to open up a 3-1 lead in the first set. The Polish star held a point for 4-1 on her serve before an umpire ruling forced the point to be replayed.
Siegemund broke in the fifth and in the seventh games to take the 4-3 lead. The German 28-year-old player won her fourth consecutive game for 5-3 with her backhand passing shot winner. Siegemund served out for the first set to 30 in the next game for 6-3 with a drop shot winner.
Siegemund went up a set and a break at the start of the second set with a backhand winner and consolidated the break by holding her service to 15 with her first ace in the second game for 2-0. Radwanska held her serve of the second set at deuce in the third game for 1-2. After saving five break points Siegemund got a double break to take a 4-1 lead with a slice forehand and a forehand winner.
Radwanska got one of the two breaks back in the sixth game for 2-4 but Siegemund broke for the third time in the second set and served for the match at 5-2. She earned three match points at 40-0 with a smash winner and sealed the 6-4 6-2 win on her first opportunity with a backhand winner.
Siegemund hit 34 winners to 17 unforced errors.
She will face he compatriot Angelique Kerber in an all-German title match.
Siegemund, who is now ranked number 71 in the world, provided the headline story this week, as she reached the semifinal in her home tournament after winning six matches including the qualifying round. The player from Filderstadt (a small town situated about 13 km from Stuttgart). She scored two impressive wins against top-10 players Simona Halep in the quarter final and Roberta Vinci in the semifinal without dropping a single set.
