Jerzy Janowicz’s Injury-plagued start to 2016 is showing no signs of easing up after his mother told Polish media that her son is likely to miss the French Open.

Janowicz, who achieved a ranking high of 14th in 2014, has only played one main draw match this year as he struggles with a knee injury. The Polish player has been plagued with problems with his knees in recent years. Last year he underwent a procedure to treat a patellar tendon rupture in his left knee.

The latest update on Janowicz’s injury isn’t an encouraging one. His mother, Anna Janowicz, recently told national media in Poland that her son is almost certain to miss next month’s French Open.

“It’s 99 percent certain that [he] will not play in Paris,” Anna Janowicz told PAP news agency.
“There’s five weeks left to the French Open. That’s not much time to get into shape,” she later added.

During his rehabilitation process, Janowicz underwent stem cell therapy on his knee. The procedure unfortunately failed to produce the results that Janowicz would of hoped for. Two months later, the procedure has failed to help the world No.104 recover as his knee woes continue.

People respond in different ways to treatment with stem cells. Some effects can be seen immediately. In the case of the knee, Jerzy did not. For two months, there was no improvement, it stood in place and we were devastated,” Mrs Janowicz said.

According to Eurosport Poland, the 25-year-old is yet to decide when he will return to the court. He has been quoted as saying that he will only return to the game when he is ‘100% fit’.

Earlier in his career, the Pole was tipped for big things in the world of tennis. In 2012 he defeated five top-20 players to reach the final of the Paris Masters. A year later he became the first man from his country to reach the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championships. Since then his biggest test has been off the court with numerous injury issues concerning his back (2013), foot (2014) and knee (2015 and 2016).

Janowicz’s last match on the tour was at this year’s Australian Open when he lost in straight sets to John Isner.
