In a recent interview with daily Serbian newspaper Sportski Zurnal, Jelena Jankovic revealed how doctors diagnosed her with cancer before she could safely get back to competing in tennis after a shoulder injury.
“I hurt a muscle in the shoulder, which is connected to the neck. It hurt when I was breathing and there was nothing I could do about it. I hurt myself picking up luggage at the airport. After picking up 4 or 5 of them, each weighing 25 kg, I felt something in the shoulder wasn’t quite right. I couldn’t breath and I couldn’t sleep. I talked to some doctors, who examined me and found a cyst in my neck. Initially they thought I had cancer and prescribed me with further examinations to take” revealed the former US Open finalist.
”I lived 10 terrible days. Luckily the results were negative. I had a tough time, especially mentally. I couldn’t practice for 4 weeks, I lost muscle tone. I can’t run well and feel pain while breathing. Despite all of this I am positive and I can’t wait to get back to competition, even though I still don’t know where that is going to be. I never thought about not coming back. I just want to get my health back and stay in form” concluded the Serb.
