This year’s French Open will see a 14% increase in Prize money compared to 2015 with a total prize money pool of EUR 32,017,500.
The biggest increase will be for players who lose in rounds two, three or four, with increases nearing to 20%. Meanwhile, the winners of the championships will take home a 2 million euro prize packet for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Since 2010, the total prize money of the tournament has increased by a staggering 15,210,100 euros. Tournament director, Guy Forget, stressed that the increases will not just benefit the elite players in the sport.
“This noticeable increase in prize money at Roland-Garros is the final raise mentioned in the four-year plan drawn up for 2013 to 2016,” Forget said in as press release.
“In total, the tournament’s prize money will have increased by an historic 70% during this four-year period, with a particular focus on those players who are eliminated in the first week, who have seen their earnings double.”
The prize money total will be the same for both men and women, continuing the tournaments equal pay policy that has been in place since 2007.
Roland Garros’ hike in pay will still not make them the highest paying Grand Slam in the world. Last year Wimbledon had a prize money total of 33.5 million EUR, which was exceeded by the US Open’s tally of 37.5 million EUR.
