Francesca Schiavone beat Alizé Cornet 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to set up a quarter final match against Dominika Cibulkova at the WTA International in Katowice.
Both players traded breaks at the start of the first set. Schiavone got another break to take a 3-1 lead. Schiavone missed three double break point chances at 4-2 0-40 before dropping her serve to love at 5-4, as she made two double faults.
Both players traded mini-breaks at the start of the tie-break. Cornet took a 4-2 lead with a forehand volley. but Schiavone broke back as Cornet made a backhand unforced error. Schiavone fought back from 2-4 by winning four points to earn two set points at 6-4. Cornet saved the first chance but Schiavone converted her second opportunity to clinch the tie-break of the first set 7-5. After the first set Schiavone received treatment on her left shoulder,
Schiavone got a double break in the second game for 2-0 and in the fourth game for 4-0 to cruise past to 6-1. Schiavone now leads 11-1 over Cornet in their head-to-head matches. Cornet got her first point on the scoreboard in the second set but Schiavone closed out the match with her forehand winner.
Pauline Parmentier upset Naomi Broady 6-4 7-5. Parmentier saved four of the five break points she faced and goto ne break for each set to take the win.
Timea Babos fought back from a slow start to edge past Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic 1-6 6-4 7-5. Babos will take on 18-year-old Jelena Ostapenko.
Magda Linette also rallied from a set down to beat Stefanie Voegele 1-6 7-5 6-2 in 2 hours and 10 minutes.
