David Ferrer’s roller coaster 2016 season has been dealt another blow after he withdrew from the Monte-Carlo Masters due to injury.

The 34-year-old, who was the seventh seed in this week’s tournament, was forced to pull out due to a soleus injury. The soleus is the back part of the muscle in the lower leg (calf). The injury comes at a time where the Spaniard is struggling on the tour. Since his run to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, he has failed to defeat a top-20 player. In his most recent tournament at the Miami Open, Ferrer suffered a second round loss to world No.88 Lucas Pouille.

Translation – I have to say that due to an injury to my soleus, I will not be able to play the tournament in Monte Carlo. I will report on my next return to the circuit !

It is unclear as to how serious the injury is. Ferrer is still scheduled to play at the Barcelona open, which starts next Monday. He will be the third seed at the tournament behind Kei Nishikori and Rafael Nadal.

So far this year, Ferrer has reached two semifinals in Auckland and Buenos Aires. The performance during the first four months of the 2016 season is a sharp contrast to that of last year for Ferrer. Going into the 2015 Monte-Carlo Masters, the Spaniard had already won three ATP titles.

Replacing Ferrer in the main draw will be lucky loser Marcel Granollers. Granollers will play Alexander Zverev in the second round.
