The Croatian team of World No. 7 in Doubles, Ivan Dodig and his lengthy partner, Franko Skugor put their country into the lead of 2-1 before the Sunday. They captured the win 7-6(5) 6-3 6-1 over the Belgian team of David Goffin and Ruben Bemelmans.
Despite playing on clay, all players were holding serves in the first set and there were no breaks. However this match could have gone completely differently, as the Belgians had two set points at 5-4, on Dodig’s serve. Dodig managed to hold, and two games later, the set went into a tiebreak. There were altogether five breaks of serve, 2 made by the Belgians and 3 by the Croatians, so Dodig and Skugor managed to take the first set. Second set seemed similar, until a break at 3-2 for the Croatians happened. Both teams held serves and Croatia was up 2 sets to 0. Goffin’s level was very noticeably dropping by every game, he seemed quite fatigued after his five set drama against Borna Coric. Croatia won the last set 6-1, with 3 breaks of serve.
