Tomas Berdych will travel to the Czech Republic for a medical assessment after withdrawing from his match against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber due to injury.

The world No.7 was trailing two sets down in his Davis Cup tie against the German before deciding to retire from the event. It is only the second time in his career that Berdych has retired during a Davis Cup match. The other occasion was against Nikolay Davydenko in 2008. During the early part of the match, Berdych complained that he felt pain in the back of his right leg prior to retiring after an hour and 42 minutes of play. Speaking to Czech media after his withdrawal, Berdych confirmed that he will return to Prague for a medical assessment.

“I will try to do my best to heal. I’m flying to Prague, I will undergo different examinations and depending on that I will decide on the next program”. The world No.7 said.
“Pan Kolar (team physiotherapist) said that it is not so terrible, and it could be a matter of a few days of active therapy. But again, it’s just his opinion, I must have an examination done. Then we will be more the wiser”.

The right leg issue comes as the first Masters tournament of the year approaches. The BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells, will get underway this week. Due to Berdych’s ranking, he is expected to be participating at the event during the later part of the week, however, the recent injury scare has put those plans in jeopardy.

The 30-year-old also talked about the possibility of him not playing in any more Davis Cup ties following this weekend’s tie. He told the press that his Davis Cup future depends on ‘what he sees fit’. During his career, Berdych has won 50 Davis Cup matches for his country. In 2012 he help guide his country to the trophy after beating Spain 3-2 in the final.
