Roger Federer is ready to compete after announcing that he will play in next week’s Miami Masters following a two-month absence from the tour due to a knee injury.

The announcement was a surprise for many after it was expected that the 17-time Grand Slam champion will return to action in April at the Monte Carlo Masters. The 34-year-old hasn’t played a match since his semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

At the start of February, Federer underwent arthroscopic surgery to treat a torn meniscus in his knee. Due to the injury, the Swiss player was forced to skip tournaments in Doha, Dubai and Indian Wells.

Federer confirmed his attendance in next week’s event on his Twitter account with a diverse use of emojis. A piece of good news for tennis fans.

At the Miami Masters, Federer has won the title on two occasions in 2005 and 2006. In his latest appearance at the 2014 tournament, the 34-year-old reached the quarterfinals before losing to Novak Djokovic. Last year he decided to skip the tournament to rest. According to his agent, Tony Godsick, the decision was due to a matter of ‘physical preservation‘.

It is still expected that the Swiss player will also play in Monte Carlo in April. The French tournament is one of only two Masters events that Federer is yet to win in his career. The other is the Rome Masters.
