David Goffin Remains Defiant In The Wake Of The Brussels Bombings

Belgian No.1 David Goffin has spoken about the Brussels terrorist attacks which killed at least 34 people and injured over 300.

On March 22nd Belgium suffered their deadliest terrorist attack in history when twin bombings occurred at Brussels airport followed an another explosion at the Maelbeek metro station. The devastation was very close to comfort for Goffin, who lives an hour’s drive from Brussels in Liege. During an exclusive interview with DH.be, the world No.15 spoke about his reaction to the attacks.

I woke up around 7 or 8 in the morning, I saw that they had tried to call me, I had umpteen missed calls and WhatsApp messages asking me if I had seen this had happened. Then I saw all the news … it was really horrible to see it all. I was completely shocked”. Goffin recalled.

Goffin also spoke about the topic during a press conference in Miami. Refusing to succumb to the fears of terrorism, Goffin said that he has to keep playing like normal, even if it strikes the heart of his country.

“You have to keep going, to do your job and just try to play like nothing happened,” he said.
“You have to keep living and enjoying life even if it’s hard in Belgium. As players, we are traveling all around the world and in a lot of airports. But when you hear bad news like you heard about Brussels, it’s tough.”

The Belgian is currently playing in the Miami Masters, where he is the 15th seed. Producing back-to-back wins over Marcel Granollers and Viktor Troicki, he will play lucky loser Horacio Zeballos in the fourth round of the tournament. He is bidding to reach the last eight of a Masters tournament for the second time within the past month. At BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells, Goffin reached his first ever Masters semifinal after defeating Marin Cilic in straight sets.
