David Goffin qualified for the semi finals of the BNP Paribas Open after defeating Marin Cilic 7-6, 6-2 and thereby booked his place in the semi finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the very first time.
Goffin, who steered Belgium to its second ever Davis Cup final in 2015, continues to take huge strides in his career. The small belgian backed up a long and tough victory over Stan Wawrinka in the best way possible, and did so by saving 11 of the 12 break points he faced throughout the match.
This victory ended a 14 match losing streak against top 10 players and also became the first Belgian to reach the semi finals at Indian Wells, so all in all, it could be said it’s been a productive week for Goffin.
Goffin could go even deeper at the event as he faces the winner of Milos Raonic and Gael Monfils in the semi finals, which given the size of the tournament, is somewhat of an opening at this stage. The Belgian will jump out onto court on Saturday with the firm belief that, whoever the opponent may be, he can grab his place in the final of the BNP Paribas Open.
