Rafael Nadal has taken a wild-card to play the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires on his favourite clay surface and will defend the title won last year. The tournament which starts next week will feature four of the top 12 players: Rafa Nadal, David Ferrer, Jo- Wilfried Tsonga and John Isner plus Fabio Fognini, Dominic Thiem and Jack Sock. Home fans will have plenty to cheer about with local players Leonardo Mayer and Federico Delbonis
Nadal has been training in Mallorca after his first round defeat against Fernando Verdasco in five sets at the Australian Open. Buenos Aires is one of the three tournaments Nadal won in 2015. The other two trophies he lifted were Stuttgart on grass and Hamburg on clay.
“I asked for this wild card after the bad result in Melbourne and I hope that Buenos Aires will once again be the start of a good run for me. I will try my best to make sure it is. I want to thank the organisers of the Argentina Open for giving me the wild card to play in Buenos Aires. The times that I have played in Argentina have been special and full of good memories because the people are some of the best in the world”, said Nadal.
