Laura Robson’s bid to return to the top tier of the WTA Tour have suffered another setback after withdrawing from next week’s Monterrey Open due to a wrist issue.

Robson, who achieved a ranking best of 27th in 2013, missed almost 18 months of the tour after undergoing surgery on her wrist. She returned to action at the Aegon International in Eastbourne last July, losing 6-1,6-0, to Daria Gavrilova. The comeback by the Brit has been slow, with Robson winning only three matches in 2015 at lower level tournaments. She decided to end her 2015 season early to focus on training.

During an interview with WTA Insider in December, Robson admitted that she felt pain in her wrist during her participation at the US Open, where she lost in the first round to Elena Vesnina.

“So after New York when it was more on than off I went and saw my surgeon again and fixed it all up. But it was a tough few weeks there. Being in the brace again was just awful”. Robson said.

“It’s been a long process and it’s still not over. I have a ranking again, which is nice. But still a lot of work to put in. It’s going to be a long way back. But if I didn’t want to do it I would have quit a long time ago.” She later added.

This year Robson decided to skip the Australian Open and focus on playing in lower level tournaments as she tries to regain form. Participating in three ITF $25,000 tournament’s in American, Robson failed to progress beyond qualifying at all of them. Now the British player faces another obstacle as she withdraws from her first WTA event of the season due to ‘an ongoing wrist injury’.

According to the BBC, Robson is still hoping that she will be able to participate at the BNP Paribas Masters in Indian Wells in two weeks time. It is expected that she would use her protected ranking to enter the tournament.

Robson is currently ranked 553rd in the world.
