British No.1 Johanna Konta has confirmed her withdrawal from the Fed Cup due to ‘ongoing intestinal issues’.
Konta recently became the first British woman since 1983 to reach the last four of a Grand Slam after her run at the Australian Open. Her run in Melbourne was ended after suffering a straight sets loss to eventual champion Angelique Kerber in the semifinals.
The 24-year-old has been troubled with problems with her intestines throughout the Australian Open as the problem gradually worsen. In a statement released by the Australian-born Brit, Konta said that the decision to withdraw was based on medical advice.
“After having consulted with two doctors, my coach, physio and the LTA, unfortunately I will have to withdraw from the upcoming Fed Cup in Israel.
“I have been advised by the doctors that playing there would jeopardise an ongoing intestinal issue that got progressively worse through the Australian Open.
“This comes as a big disappointment to me and I regret not being able to play. I have represented GB every time I have been asked to and fully intend to play again given the opportunity in the future.”
The success is Australia has elevated Konta 19 places up the rankings to a career best of 28.
It is currently unknown who will replace Konta in the British Fed Cup team. The team will travel to Israel later this week to play in the Europe/Africa Group 1 play-off. Britain is drawn in pool B with Georgia and South Africa. The winners of each pool will progress to the playoff stage. The playoffs determine which two nations will participate in the World Group II playoffs. The British team for the Fed Cup is the following:-
